Instant magic transforming ordinary glass into a smart space

Imagine this: the glass walls of a conference room are normally completely transparent, allowing sunlight to stream in and creating an open, bright atmosphere; yet, when an important meeting begins, a simple flick of a switch instantly transforms the glass into an opaque, frosted finish, blocking the view and safeguarding trade secrets. Bathroom glass partitions offer the same instant versatility—turning opaque for privacy or clear for an open feel. This is not a scene from a sci-fi movie, but a reality made possible by PDLC smart switchable privacy film.

What is PDLC?

PDLC is an ultra-thin composite film with a highly sophisticated core structure:

Two layers of transparent conductive film (usually ITO – indium tin oxide coating)

A polymer matrix sandwiched in between

Countless micron-sized liquid crystal droplets evenly dispersed within the polymer

The entire film is typically only about 0.3–0.4 mm thick. It can be applied directly onto existing glass like a window film, or laminated in the factory to create switchable privacy glass.

Power Off state:

The liquid crystal molecules are randomly and disorderly arranged. Incoming light is heavily scattered, making the glass appear as a uniform milky-white frosted surface. It still transmits light (maintaining the brightness of the space) but completely blocks the view of what is inside, providing true privacy protection.

Power On state:

When a low-voltage alternating current (typically 48–65V AC) is applied, the electric field instantly aligns the liquid crystal molecules in an orderly manner. At this point, the refractive index of the liquid crystals matches that of the polymer, allowing light to pass through almost in a straight line, and the glass becomes transparent and clear.

The entire switching process usually takes only 0.1–0.3 seconds, with almost no noticeable delay. Moreover, it has no mechanical moving parts, making it quiet, reliable, and long-lasting (up to over 100,000 hours).Power consumption is also remarkably low — maintaining the transparent state requires only about 3–8 watts per square meter, far less than an ordinary light bulb.

Future trends

With technological advancements, PDLC is evolving beyond the traditional “white fog” toward more possibilities: lower haze (clearer transparency), dark-colored versions, independent zone control, and smart windows integrated with solar power generation glass. The market is also growing rapidly, driven by key sectors such as architecture, automotive, and smart homes.

Smart electrically controlled fogging glass film is not just a new material — it fundamentally changes the way we interact with space. It transforms glass from a passive transparent barrier into an intelligent interface that can actively respond to needs. Whether for minimalist home designs or office spaces that require flexibility and privacy, it offers an elegant, efficient, and futuristic solution.

The next time you walk into a glass meeting room and it switches from transparent to private in just one second, remember — behind that is PDLC quietly working its magic.
